A car has been driven into a shop front and set alight, police said.

Northumbria Police officers were called to Tan Solo on Ryhope Road in Sunderland on Monday at about 11:15 BST.

They found a silver car that had been reversed through the front shutters of the premises, before being set on fire.

Nobody was injured but the shop and adjacent properties were "significantly damage", police said.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

Det Con Andy Benjamin said: "In particular, we want to hear from anyone about vehicles matching the image leaving the scene, or anybody who sees anything else of interest on CCTV.

"Your information, no matter how insignificant you feel it may be, could be crucial to our inquiries."
