The Northern Soul music era of the 1970s is being celebrated with a new comedy play that is coming to the New Vic Theatre in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Do I Love You?, by John Godber, draws on the playwright’s love of the genre which he has been a fan of for 50 years.

Mr Godber says the show reflects how that music scene is making a comeback, because the UK is in a similar place, socially and politically, to how it was in the 70s.

It follows three young people, brought together through the music, and features choreography by 2022 Northern Soul world dance champion Sally Molloy.

Mr Godber said: “We are aware how important the [Stoke] area was in the history of Northern Soul.

“We are also delighted to have been able to have the show choreographed by... Sally, who herself is from Staffordshire.”

Ms Molloy said there are similarities with her own story.

“The way he wrote it is so bob on,” she said.

“I’ve actually had conversations with people, that are in the script, that he did not know.

“He’s just done that much research, he’s a master of his trade, he truly is.”

She said the play would appeal to fans of Northern Soul along with those who are yet to be introduced to it.

Do I Love You? runs at the New Vic from 30 January to 3 February.
