Police are appealing for witnesses after a "shocking incident" in which gunshots were fired at a property in Sheffield.

Officers were made aware on Thursday that a weapon was reportedly fired on Lyons Road in Burngreave in the early hours of Thursday 28 May, South Yorkshire Police said.

The shots had caused damage to a property, but the occupier was unharmed.

An investigation had been launched and the area had been searched, a force spokesperson said.

While a cordon had since been removed, extra police patrols were also taking place in the area, they added.

Det Insp Claire Moss, senior investigating officer, said: "This shocking incident could very easily have caused serious injuries or even a fatality, as shots were fired at an occupied property, and it is only by chance that no-one was injured.

“Officers are determined to ensure the safety and peace of mind of residents in the area who may have been affected by this incident."

Anyone with information about what happened, or who witnessed the incident, was urged to contact police.
