Residents say they have "experienced some nastiness" from motorhome owners

A town's seafront is being spoiled by a plague of motorhomes, campervans and even "vans with mattresses chucked in the back", residents have said.

Instead of using campsites, locals in Morecambe said visitors were exploiting lax rules on the promenade and they are calling for a ban on parking there.

Resident Michael Dickson Glen said he was sworn at when he challenged owners he saw "disposing toilet waste down drains".

Lancashire County Council, which looks after street parking in the town, has been contacted for comment.

Mr Dickson Glen said: "These are people in the 50s age group who should know better.

“Why don’t they go to proper camp sites? It only costs £12 to get hooked-up and have proper facilities.

"I’m paying the top rate of council tax to live here. But there are campervans parked all along the promenade, blocking the view."

Another resident Suzanne Smith said she contacted police after she "experienced some nastiness" from motorhome owners.

"It’s not good for residents’ mental health," she said.

"Right through the summer we experienced a white wall of motorhomes and disrespect from the owners."

Residents say visitors are exploiting lax rules on the promenade

As the new summer season approaches residents have called for clear rules to be imposed.

Mr Dickson Glen said he would like a ban on motorhomes and campervans at all times on the promenade.

"The other day I passed a man and heard the unmistakable sound of him urinating. I asked what he was doing? He gave me a load of verbal abuse," he said.

"How can they justify parking on the prom all day and not spending any money [in the town]?"

Morecambe town councillors said they were looking into the issues.
