A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after an elderly woman died following a fire in East Sussex.

Six fire engines were called to a fire in a first floor maisonette in St Mark's Close in Bexhill-on-Sea just before 22:00 GMT on 13 November.

A 99-year-old woman, a neighbour, was hospitalised for smoke inhalation and later died.

Sussex Police say a 26-year-old Hastings man has been arrested and bailed on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

Fire crews from Hastings, Eastbourne, Pevensey and Burwash were called to help put out the blaze.

Sussex Police is appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
