A gym will undergo a £114,000 upgrade in a bid to attract people who might normally avoid working out.

The Feelgood Factory at the Palatine Leisure Centre in Blackpool is hoping to bring in customers whose GPs might have told them to get fitter.

Blackpool Council said the gym attracted members who felt "comfortable" in a "less intimidating" environment.

Blackpool has one of the lowest life expectancy rates in the country.

A council report said: “The equipment is a range of power-assisted machines which provides an option for low impact exercise in a sociable setting for those who are looking to improve their mobility, strength and balance, lose weight and manage their underlying health conditions.”

The Feelgood Factory, which has been at the leisure centre in St Annes Road, South Shore for 10 years, has more than 440 members.
