More than £174,000 of government funding is to be invested into walking and cycling schemes in Shropshire.

The money comes from Active Travel England’s Capability Fund, external and is 50% more than Shropshire Council received the previous year.

It will go towards schemes that promote active travel and which help to encourage more people to walk and cycle in the county.

The council's deputy leader Ian Nellins said the new investment was "great news" and would do more to make Shropshire a "healthier, more sustainable place".

“We are very grateful to Active Travel England for their support to help boost active travel in Shropshire, and will be bringing forward a shortlist of projects that this funding can support soon," he added.

A number of schemes in the county are already being supported by Active Travel England, including enhancements to the Shrewsbury gyratory, which is expected to start later this year.
