Roadworks on a major route in a tourist town are nearing completion, according to council bosses.

Engineering work for the A439 improvement scheme, at Stratford-upon-Avon, would be finished by 2 August Warwickshire County Council said.

The project aims to significantly reduce crashes, and create a safer environment for pedestrians.

Jan Matecki, portfolio holder for transport and planning, said the authority was delighted with the progress made.

“The recent completion of road widening by Ingon Lane and substantial headway on footway reconstruction are important milestones,” he said.

“These improvements will create a safer and more user-friendly environment for pedestrians and motorists alike."

Tim Sinclair, who represents the Stratford North ward, said he was pleased to see it progressing well and thanked people for their patience over the disruption caused.

The authority said Warwick Road would open to two-way traffic on 19 July and a one-way diversion will be removed at this point.

Ingon Lane will remain closed for a week after this, with temporary traffic lights in place and overnight closures from 22 July and 2 August.

Additional works had been necessary to divert uncharted utilities which had been identified at the Ingon Lane junction and towards Ryon Hill.
