Children across Wolverhampton will get the chance to go swimming, to the gym or book a court for free as part of a new initiative to encourage them to take up a sport.

The Wolves Foundation charity has teamed up with the city council to offer 40 hours of free activities at leisure and community centres across the city.

The scheme is open to anyone up to 18 years old, up to 25 for care leavers or young adults with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).

Named Yo! Active, the scheme will run for two years.

"It will help increase the number of children and young people who are able to enjoy physical activity in the community and at our WV Active leisure centres," said councillor Jasbir Jaspal, the council's cabinet member for Adults and Wellbeing.

Tom Warren, senior manager at Wolves Foundation, added: "The project will remove barriers to children and young people taking part in physical activity, with a range of opportunities on offer."
