Two men have died and two women have been injured in a car crash.

Northumbria Police said it received a report of a crash on Chillingham Road in the Heaton area of Newcastle at 02:15 BST on Thursday.

A silver Mercedes 250 AMG had hit a wall, the force said.

Emergency services treated the two men, aged 30 and 26, at the scene, but were unable to save them.

Two 19-year-old women, who were also in the car, were taken to hospital with serious injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening.

The force said it was investigating and appealed for information.

The women's next of kin have been told and are being supported by police.

Sgt Andy Ferguson said: "This is an incredibly sad incident and our thoughts are firmly with the families and loved ones of the two people who have tragically died."
