Police officers have seized a suspected XL bully dog from a block of flats following a number of calls from "concerned residents".

Hertfordshire Constabulary carried out a warrant at Clayton House on Lemsford Road, Hatfield, on Tuesday.

Police said the suspected XL bully seized on Tuesday remained in the care of the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire dog unit and would be examined to determine the exact breed.

PC Mitchell Cartwright, from the Welwyn Hatfield neighbourhood policing team, said: "I hope this reassures the public that we are always listening to your concerns.

"The reports that residents made allowed us to build up a picture of intelligence so that we could secure the warrant."

XL bullies have been linked to a number of recent attacks

New laws in England and Wales were introduced in December which meant XL bully dogs must be kept on a lead and muzzled in public.

It followed a number of attacks. However, campaigners insisted banning the breed was not the answer.

The force said it was also investigating an incident at the same block of flats, where a dog reportedly bit a woman's knee. She was taken to hospital for treatment.

A man in his 50s was arrested in connection with the incident and released on bail.
