A bid to make Walsall Market a “destination event” has prompted a review of its opening times, goods and facilities.

Walsall Council said the number of shoppers visiting its markets had reduced significantly in recent years and it was looking at the future.

Councillor Adrian Andrew said shopping habits were changing, but added: “Street markets still have a vital role to play, and we want to ensure our markets are destination events and play an important cultural, social and economic role.”

Reviews of the markets in Willenhall and Bloxwich are expected to take place soon.

Andrew said: “The way we shop and the way our communities use high streets and town centres is changing. Consumer shopping habits have changed and moved online, and our markets need to move with the times and adapt.”

On social media, external, one woman called for “more stuff from the past”, including flowers, fruit and veg, and said there used to be a pet stall that sold “beautiful handmade bedding”.

Another man wrote “there ain’t a market no more”, while others called for more stalls, and one woman posted: “Walsall market used to be one of the best markets around.”

People were asked to reply to the questionnaire so views could be recorded.

Walsall Council’s website said its three markets offered a variety of goods.

A consultation on the future of Walsall market can be completed online, external.
