Two teenagers have been taken to hospital after being injured by exploding fireworks, police said.

One 18-year-old suffered injuries to his hand while the other, also 18, had injuries to his face, North Yorkshire Police said.

Officers were called to the incident on Scarborough foreshore at about 19:15 GMT on Wednesday. The teenagers were believed to have been holding the fireworks when they exploded.

Labour MP for Scarborough and Whitby Alison Hume said her thoughts were with the young men and their families after the "terrible accident".

Hume said she had been "so upset" to hear about the incident.

She said: "My sincere thanks to the emergency services who attended the scene, and the health teams treating them now at James Cook Hospital."

Hume said she was aware of "graphic videos" of the incident circulating online and urged people to "think about the distress that sharing these causes both to the families involved and others stumbling upon them".

She encouraged anyone with information about the incident to contact North Yorkshire Police.

Ripon incident

The force is also investigating a separate report of fireworks being fired into Ripon market place at about 21:00 GMT on Wednesday.

A spokesperson said the fireworks had "narrowly" missed members of the public.

They said: "We are appealing to anyone who has been affected by the incident, witnessed it, or has any video footage such as dashcam, CCTV or doorbell footage to get in touch."
