Work to install speed cameras at a "high risk" spot known for speeding is starting.

The equipment will be in place on the A595 at Holmrook, near Sellafield in Cumbria, after surveys detected average speeds of 42mph (68kph), in the 30mph (48kph) village.

Cumberland Council and Cumbria Police said they were working together to address concerns raised by residents.

"The A595 at Holmrook has been identified as a high-risk corridor due to frequent speeding," a council spokesman said.

They added the project was part of efforts to target areas with high collision rates or community-reported concerns.

Work is also under way to install speed cameras on the A6071 at Smithfield, near Brampton, where similar average speeds were recorded as Holmrook.

Cumberland councillor Denise Rollo, executive member for sustainable places, said the projects were "meaningful steps" to prevent accidents.

"These new cameras are a direct response to local concerns and are part of our commitment to making Cumberland's roads safer for everyone," she added.
