A business has been fined £1,600 after rubbish dumped in a lay-by was traced back to it.

Three fines were issued by Wiltshire Council after waste was discovered in an A303 westbound layby near Chicklade Bottom.

The authority's environmental enforcement officers were led to a business based in Southampton, which admitted to dumping the waste.

Nick Holder, cabinet member for highways and street scene, said the council adopted a "zero-tolerance approach" to environmental crime.

The business was also unable to produce the necessary documentation to prove it was lawfully disposing of its waste.

This resulted in fines of £300 for failing to produce a waste carriers licence, £300 for failing to produce waste transfer documents and a £1,000 fixed penalty for fly-tipping.

Mr Holder said: “These fines highlight our continued efforts to tackling fly-tipping here in Wiltshire and we’re determined to further reduce this environmental crime."

“Everybody is responsible for their own waste, and we urge residents and businesses to responsibly dispose of it – or we will take action,” he added.
