New 20mph speed limits look set to be introduced on a number of residential streets in Leicester.

The roads chosen for reduced speed limits include Evington Valley Road, Evington Drive, Mayflower Road and Tavistock Drive, as well as the streets connected to them.

Part of Ethel Road, outside the Mayflower Primary School, would also come under the plan, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

Traffic calming measures like speed bumps would also be installed to slow drivers, documents published online by Leicester City Council show.

The plan has largely gained support from those consulted, according to the LDRS.

More than half of the 150 residents who took part in the council’s consultation – 98 – said they were in favour of the speed limit, while 47 were opposed to it.

Stoneygate ward councillor Raffiq Moosa feels the proposal did not go far enough, the LDRS said.

He requested “the whole of Ethel Road up to Madani High school” be turned into a 20mph zone with traffic calming measures also included along the entire stretch.

“There have been regular accidents on this stretch of road and with the school entrance being situated on this stretch of road [extending the restrictions] makes sense," Mr Moosa added.

Assistant mayor for environment and transport Geoff Whittle approved the proposals this week.

However, any other member of the council can call in the plan for scrutiny and debate until 28 August.

The continued rollout of 20mph zones across the city forms part of the authority’s plan to improve air quality locally.

It is also proposing improvements to walking and cycling routes and to public transport under the updated approach.
