A man who raped a woman in an Aberdeen churchyard has been jailed for seven years.

Sean Wyness, 34, was found guilty after a trial at the High Court in Aberdeen.

Police had been called to St Clements Church in the early hours of Sunday 15 May, 2022.

Wyness was given a nine-year extended sentence - with seven years in prison and two years of further supervision.

After the sentencing, Det Insp Ryan Morris of Police Scotland said: “Wyness will now face the consequences of his despicable actions in prison.

“I would like to commend the woman for her strength in coming forward during the investigation.

“We would encourage anyone who has experienced any form of violent or sexual offence, regardless of when it happened, to report it to us."
