A row of garages in Wolverhampton is set to be demolished to make way for a new block of flats.

The city council submitted an application to demolish the 36 garages on the corner of Russell Street, Zoar Street and Merridale Street a year ago and terminated leases with the owners.

One neighbour objected, stating the 12 flats would block their views and sunlight. But the council said while "some harm" would come from overlooking, it would not be unacceptable.

Planners have now recommended that the application for a three-storey block of flats be approved later this month.

"The contribution towards meeting the council's growing housing targets, and the delivery of affordable housing, carries significant positive weight in the determination of this planning application," the council report said.

"The location and proposed layout would cumulatively deliver a good standard of amenity to any future residents."

The garages have previously been described as "dangerous" and in a "state of disrepair".

The council's planning committee will discuss the plans on 9 September.
