A British Army chef has appeared in court charged with having a gun and explosives - including a homemade "cannon".

Mark Broadhurst was arrested in September 2024 and two homes in Chesterfield and Bolsover, Derbyshire, were searched.

The 27-year-old is accused of having various quantities of low explosive black powder, sulphur powder and a muzzle-loading firearm.

Appearing at the Old Bailey via video-link on Friday, Mr Broadhurst was told he will face trial in June.

The defendant faces charges of having an explosive substance and possession of a firearm without a licence.

The first charge also alleges that on or before 25 September, he had an "improvised homemade cannon".

The defendant, whose address was given as Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, spoke to confirm his identity.

A provisional two-week trial before a High Court judge at Sheffield Crown Court from 29 June next year was set.

A plea hearing at the Old Bailey will take place on 13 February.

Mr Broadhurst, who is suspended by the British Army, was granted continued conditional bail.
