Drivers are being warned of a scam featuring fake QR codes stuck on pay and display ticket machines in a town's car parks.

Luton Council said the notices claimed the machines were out of order and directed drivers to pay by scanning the QR code.

Posting on social media, the council warned drivers: “Please be vigilant of a QR code scam on pay and display machines.

"Do not scan the code if you see one of these stickers in our car parks.”

The post said customers could still use the machines to pay by cash or card, as well as apps such as PayByPhone.

The town was not the first place to be targeted by parking meter scams. In recent months, councils in Leicester, Dorset, Hampshire, Gloucestershire and Devon have warned drivers over similar fake QR codes stuck on pay and display machines.

Luton Council said it was working to remove the stickers as quickly as possible.
