Plans for solar farm set to take step forward

Plans for a solar farm on the Leicestershire and Rutland border that could provide power for about 25,000 homes are set to take a step forward.

Melton Borough Council's planning committee has been recommended by officials to approve proposals for a solar farm measuring 87 hectares (215 acres) on land at Stygate Lane between Pickwell, Somerby and Whissendine.

A council report stated plans had also been submitted to Rutland County Council and the part of the development in Melton would not go forward unless both authorities granted planning permission.

The report added the proposals would enable Melton to make a "significant contribution" to the decarbonisation of the national power supply.

Documents submitted by the applicant said the proposed development would meet the electricity demand of up to 25,175 homes and would save about 43,393 tonnes of carbon each year.

According to Melton Borough Council, plans for the proposed development are due to be discussed on 28 August while the application remains under consideration by Rutland County Council.
