A deal is in place to build 750 new homes on a former police headquarters site.

The joint venture agreement will see the redevelopment of the 9.5 acre (3.8 hectare) Greater Manchester Police site, close to Manchester United's stadium in Old Trafford.

In addition to new housing, the scheme includes plans for a hotel, shops, offices and leisure facilities, the Local Democracy Reporting Service reported.

The force relocated to a new facility in Central Park, Newton Heath, in 2012.

Developers Far East Consortium (FEC) were selected by Trafford Council and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), following a procurement process.

The GMCA said the scheme included a commitment to deliver 25% affordable housing.

'High-profile location'

It also forms part of Trafford Council’s newly adopted Civic Quarter Area Action Plan for Old Trafford and Stretford.

Trafford councillor Liz Patel, executive member for economy and regeneration, said: “We look forward to progressing this exciting project which will bring forward 750 sustainable new homes, which includes significant numbers of much needed affordable housing.”

Gavin Taylor, managing director at FEC Manchester, described the site as a "high-profile location" that the community wanted to see "brought back into use for the good of the people".

"We intend to do just that by leveraging our significant regeneration expertise to deliver a place that creates spaces for people to live, work and come together," he added.
