Penny Farthing hill climb returns for 8th year

The Beachy Head penny farthing hill climb will return to Eastbourne for the 8th year on 10 August

A penny farthing world championships will see riders racing up to the top of a natural landmark as it returns for its eighth year.

About 30 cyclists from the UK and Europe are expected to take part in the Beachy Head hill climb time trial in Eastbourne, racing from the seafront to the top of the East Sussex cliff on Sunday, 10 August at 10:00 BST.

The race, which takes part on open public roads, sees the quickest riders making the 4.69km (2.91-mile) climb in about 12 minutes.

A spokesperson for the organisers encouraged spectators to arrive at the corner of Baslow Road and Upper Dukes Drive on the route and cheer on riders as they competed to make the climb the fastest.

Riders in the race set off at one minute intervals, tackling the route with an elevation gain of 150m (492ft).

The event is for amateur riders and is open to anyone with a traditional or modern penny farthing with a wheel diameter in excess of 116cm (46 inches).
