Several vehicles have been damaged on the A2 in Kent after being hit by projectiles potentially launched from a catapult, police said.

The damage happened near Darenth at about 17:50 GMT on Thursday and police said the vehicles were reportedly struck by objects fired from an area near the carriageway.

Ch Insp Will Lay said: "It is fortunate that nobody was injured as a result of this incident.

"We initially thought catapults may have been used to launch the projectiles, but [we] are keeping an open mind as to how the damage was caused."

Nobody has been arrested yet in connection with the damage, but a ball bearing has been recovered for forensic examination.

Officers are appealing with anyone with information to contact Kent Police.
