A major road connecting West and North Yorkshire has been closed due to a "serious multi-vehicle collision", according to National Highways.

The crash took place on the A1(M) between junction 45 near Boston Spa and junction 46 near Wetherby just after 10:00 BST and involved "a number of vehicles", West Yorkshire Police said.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said one person had been airlifted to hospital while a second casualty was taken to hospital by road.

The road was initially closed in both directions but one lane has now re-opened on the southbound carriageway. Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
