Council to track numbers using public toilets

Dumfries and Galloway Council will monitor the daily number of people using public toilets in the region
- Published
The daily number of people using public loos in Dumfries and Galloway is to be tracked by the council next year.
The local authority is planning to install sensors at the entrances of public toilets to count the number of people using them.
A council report has said that around £550,000 is spent annually on staffing, maintaining and cleaning public loos.
The local authority said the review would "help improve the experience for residents and visitors to the region" and ensure resources are best allocated.
Dumfries and Galloway Council currently operates 58 public toilets across the region, 11 of which only operate between April and October.
The review will consider the current state of public toilets and whether demand changes at different times of the year.
Councillors have asked for a review of public toilet provision in the region to explore potential changes to locations.
The scope of the review is to be approved on 4 November, and the installation of people-counters in January will begin the data collection process.
