Jersey Museum is hosting a "living history" event showcasing how Victorians would have celebrated Christmas in the island.

The event features characters from Victorian times and the building also reflected the era, Jersey Heritage said.

Vic Tanner Davy, Jersey Heritage’s head of programmes, said the building offered people "an authentic look into Victorian times".

"This Christmas, the gas-lit rooms will be full of characters you might have met on a Victorian street or in a late 19th Century home," he said.

"Victorian Christmas, or Noué Victorien in Jèrriais, will give people the chance to meet these characters and learn how they celebrated Christmas at a time that was responsible for inventing many of the festive traditions we still celebrate today."

Jersey Heritage said visitors, who were encouraged to dress up to match the era, would be able to listen to tales by the fire or brave the "penny dreadful" tales in the attic. It ends with an encounter with Father Christmas.

The event is on Saturday and Sunday between 10:00 and 16:00 GMT.
