New vision for town with market, park and hotels
- Published
New images have shown what a town centre could look like if plans for hotels, a new leisure centre and 2,000 new homes are approved.
Wirral Council released the images of a reimagined Birkenhead as "another major step forward in our plans to revitalise the town centre".
A new market, removing the flyovers to the tunnel, adding more green spaces and three multi-storey car parks, as well as a new neighbourhood around St Werburgh’s Square, are also being considered.
Other ideas include the relocation of Europa Pools leisure centre and moving the Vue cinema and library into the town centre.
The council said 2,255 new homes could be built alongside new hotels and a new "sponge park" along Borough Road as part of the potential regeneration.
The sponge park would take in surface water and reduce the risk of sewage discharges into the River Mersey.
The council said it hoped to open up views into the town centre and encourage more visitors with restaurants, cafés and bars "with a family focus".
It also added that its masterplan for the town centre encouraged "more walking and cycling".
The council has asked for public feedback on the plans.
