A police helicopter crew who were captured in video footage flying low to chase a suspect on a scrambler bike will face no disciplinary action.

The footage emerged online showing the aircraft pursuing the suspect near Carr Mill Dam in St Helens, Merseyside, on Wednesday 13 August.

The man was later arrested on suspicion of several offences including dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, and driving while disqualified.

The National Police Air Service said that following an internal review it was "satisfied the crew had acted appropriately".

"While the footage has understandably generated public interest, it is important to view it in the full context of an operation that lasted over an hour," Chief Supt Fiona Gaffney said.

"Our air crew was deployed to assist Merseyside Police following reports of a man riding a scrambler bike in a dangerous and reckless manner.

"He was alleged to have mounted pavements, sped through residential areas and narrowly missed a pedestrian."

Ch Supt Gaffney said the review included the assessment of the helicopter's camera footage, radio commentary and "operational decision-making".

"The fast-paced and unpredictable nature of vehicle pursuits can require crews to make rapid decisions to ensure public safety," she said.

"We thank the public for their concern and engagement and we remain committed to transparency and professionalism in all our operations."

A second male was also arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and assisting an offender.
