Works to restore Fordbridge Park in Ashford are continuing after an Esso pipeline project

Work to restore a Surrey park after a fuel pipeline was replaced in the area will carry on into the spring, Spelthorne Borough Council (SBC) has said.

Remedial works in Fordbridge Park in Ashford are continuing after reseeding and landscaping efforts were hampered by bad weather in 2024.

Joanne Sexton, council leader, thanked park users for their patience after previous works by Esso to install a replacement fuel pipeline beneath the park caused a "lengthy period of disruption".

Esso's Southampton to London pipeline project began in Ashford in autumn 2022 and finished in 2023.

'Lengthy disruption'

In December, SBC said Esso was expected to hand back responsibility of the park to the council before the end of 2024.

The council has since confirmed the park will not be fully returned until outstanding works are completed.

A council spokesperson said it was keen to complete the works "as soon as possible" but that no date had been set for works to end.

Ms Sexton said: "The restoration works completed so far have not been achieved without difficulties, but we very much look forward to seeing these efforts bear fruit in the months ahead.

"Residents' patience and understanding over the lengthy period of disruption that has taken place is very much appreciated."

A council spokesperson said four locations in the park may require further work, which would be assessed in the early spring.

Other works, such as fertiliser application, will be completed by Esso contractors "when weather conditions are suitable", the council said.

Several apple, plum, cherry and walnut trees were also planted in the area to "enhance biodiversity and enjoyment of the park", the council added.

Esso has been approached for a comment.
