People who have been through Jersey's care system will benefit from the sale of a former children's facility in St Martin.

Aviemore was a residential centre for young people with special needs.

The site was originally up for sale for £3m but ministers confirmed it would now be sold to the Jersey Development Company for £1.3m for housing.

It is based next door to the former children's home Haut de La Garenne - named the "house of horrors" after being at the centre of decades of abuse allegations in the care system.

'Meaningful and lasting support'

Infrastructure minister constable Andy Jehan said all the profits would benefit islanders who had been in care.

"The full value of the revenue generated from this sale will be allocated to the Endowment Fund for Care-Experienced islanders, ensuring that this decision delivers meaningful and lasting support for our community," he said.

Once finalised and planning permission is agreed the company will have to pay "an agreed overage arrangement payment" within 14 days.
