Guernsey's adult minimum wage will rise to £12 next month, after politicians voted for the increase.

The current adult minimum wage in Guernsey is £10.65 and £9.65 for 16 and 17 year olds, which will rise to £10.80 next month.

Deputies voted by 33 to 2 to approve the plans from the Committee for Employment and Social Security (ESS).

Proposals to limit the increase for adults to £11.25 per hour, which were put forward by the Committee for Economic Development, were defeated.

ESS President Peter Roffey said: "We live in a very expensive island, for adults to be expected to work for less than £12 an hour is unacceptable.

"There's no science to that, at the moment we have the lowest minimum wage of our counterparts."

Jersey's minimum wage is set to increase to £13 from April 2025, while in the Isle of Man the adult minimum wage is £11.45.

In 2018 Guernsey's States approved a proposal to move towards a minimum wage which would see people working 40-hour weeks earn at least 60% of the median earnings in Guernsey.

Guernsey's median wage at the end of 2023 was £41,564 per year.
