A university's film school is to receive £1.25m of government funding.

Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) is being awarded the capital funding after making a successful bid to the Office for Students (OfS), a non-departmental public body of the Department for Education.

The funds are going towards Bournemouth Film School (BFS), the largest film school outside of London.

Jonathan Carr, the school's director, said: "The funding will support investment in buildings, facilities, equipment, innovation and future technology for BFS, further enhancing and enriching the student experience."

Mr Carr said: "We're delighted the OfS bid has been successful, especially at a time when the BFS courses are evolving to reflect the skills needs of the global film industry."

Nolan Smith, the OfS director of resources and finance, said: "This was a very competitive funding round, and the projects we are supporting will make a tangible difference to current and future students."

He added: "As well as expanding opportunities for students in strategically important subject areas, these projects will offer a boost to local and regional economies and promote national growth."

Jacqui Smith, Minister for Skills, said her government was "committed to supporting colleges and universities as engines of opportunity and growth up and down the country".
