Highland Council is to convert a former hospital in Kingussie into affordable housing.

St Vincent's was closed in 2021 when NHS Highland opened Badenoch and Strathspey Community Hospital in Aviemore.

Following its closure, the Kingussie property has been targeted by vandals.

Highland Council took over the site earlier this year and plans to start work on constructing "high-quality" housing next month.

The local authority said it had taken over St Vincent's following a period of negotiation.

A spokesperson said: "The immediate priority is the demolition of the extension built at the rear of the property.

"A demolition contract has been awarded, and work is estimated to begin early October 2025.

"The council currently plans to develop a range of housing on the site, and is now working on the detailed programme."

The project forms part of the council's strategic housing investment plan.

St Vincent's was opened in 1901 and offered treatment for tuberculosis, an infection that affects lungs and also know as TB.

It was redeveloped as a hospital providing geriatric care in the 1970s.
