A driver died when his car left the carriageway of a motorway and caught fire.

The black Audi A5 left the northbound M57 between junctions two and three near Knowsley, north-west of Liverpool, at about 15:00 BST.

Other people at the scene "rushed into a difficult situation to help" the driver, a man in his 60s, but he died from his serious injuries, Merseyside Police said.

A 31-year-old man from Kirkby has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

Det Sgt Kurt Timpson said: "First and foremost our thoughts remain with the family of the man who sadly lost his life. Our priority is to ensure that we get answers for the family.

"We ask motorists who were in the area at around 3pm or immediately after the collision to please check your dashcam footage, front and rear, for any vital evidence which may help.

"Finally I wish to thank members of the public who rushed into a difficult situation to help after the collision took place. Their efforts were very much appreciated."
