Police investigating a stabbing have said they are keeping "an open mind" whether it is linked to an earlier incident.
The "serious attack" happened in Ashcombe Road, Weston-super-Mare, at about 03:15 BST on Thursday, Avon and Somerset Police said.
The victim, who is in his 40s, was taken to hospital with knife injuries that have left him in a "critical but stable" condition.
Det Insp George Pettingell said: "We are aware there was an altercation in the area around Osborne Road and Earlham Grove at about 22:45 BST on Wednesday 14 May and we are keeping an open mind whether the two incidents are linked."
The force said on Thursday it had referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct "in relation to an individual being injured following prior police contact".
Neighbourhood officers are carrying out additional patrols in the area, the force said.
Det Insp Pettingell added: "Enquiries at the scene were completed overnight, but we continue to review CCTV footage in an attempt to identify those responsible.
"This was a really serious attack and we'd urge anyone with information to please contact us."
