A 75-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life following a fire at a house.

Five crews from Berkshire and two from Hampshire were sent to Skippons Close, Wash Common, near Newbury, on Thursday at 19:05 GMT.

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) said one person was rescued from the house by firefighters and taken into the care of ambulance crews.

The fire, in the first floor and roof, was reported to have been put out shortly before midnight.

Thames Valley Police said the arrested man from Newbury did not sustain injuries but had been taken to hospital, where he remains.

RBFRS said an investigation would be carried out to establish the cause.
