Hull KR want to rename the road where its ground is after a "significant" rugby league player.

The club's home, Craven Park, is on Poorhouse Lane, but the club has asked Hull City Council to change this to Phil Lowe Way.

Lowe scored 179 tries in 418 games for the east Hull club. He died in March, aged 74.

Hull City Council has prepared a report, which will be considered at a meeting on 12 November.

In the council report, external, the club described Lowe as a "former eminent player", and said the current street name was "not based upon a solid historical foundation".

The report further suggested Poorhouse Lane "does little to reflect the character of the area or the aspirations of the club to invest and enhance the area".

Normally, a period of 10 years post-death is required for dedicating a street name, however the report highlighted a precedent in the city with the naming of Roger Millward Way.

The news was announced by Hull KR chairman Paul Sewell in a speech at the club's awards night on Monday evening, and was welcomed by Lowe's son, Andy Lowe, on social media.

Club legend

Hull-born Lowe was a second-row forward who played for the club from 1967 to 1983, apart from a two-year stint in Australia at Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles from 1974 to 1976, when he won the New South Wales premiership with the Sydney club.

The Great Britain international was a key member of the Robins side that won the title in 1978-79 and the Challenge Cup the following year.

He was also the youngest member of the victorious Great Britain Ashes tour party to Australasia in 1970.

Speaking after Lowe's death, club owner Neil Hudgell said: "The sight of Phil Lowe in full flight was something no one who witnessed it will ever forget."

He added: "Phil will be greatly missed by his very many friends. A true red and white, Hull KR has lost a legend, and part of its fabric."
