Thieves attempted to steal a cash machine using a tipper truck, two cars, and a forklift-style vehicle before being disturbed by police.

The incident happened in Northallerton's Applegarth car park at about 22:43 GMT on Friday, according to North Yorkshire Police.

A member of the public reported hearing "smashing and a lot of noise" and seeing a telehandler, a tree felling tipper van and two Volvo estates at the scene.

A 34-year-old man found hiding under a bush was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to burgle, going equipped and dangerous driving. He has since been released on bail.

When officers arrived at the scene the drivers of the two Volvos made off, but the telehandler and tipper-style van were left at the scene.

Police later found the Volvos abandoned at different locations nearby, and said "several items that would be associated with crime" were found inside the telehandler and tipper truck.

Officers appealed for anyone with private CCTV or doorbell cameras to review their footage and get in touch if they captured any suspicious activity.
