Safety concerns mean Hereford FC's Edgar Street stadium has been a three-sided venue since 2014

A non-league football stadium could soon be a four-sided venue once again under new plans.

What used to be the away terrace at the Blackfriars End at Hereford FC's Edgar Street has stayed closed due to safety concerns since Hereford United, the original tenants, were liquidated in 2014.

The fourth stand could be created through a proposal from Herefordshire Council to create further student accommodation.

The authority claimed the development would support the growing number of higher education students at Hereford College of Arts, NMITE, and Wye Valley NHS Trust.

Hereford FC chairman Chris Ammonds described the plans as "very exciting".

"It is great news that there is a firm commitment to returning Edgar Street to a four-sided stadium as part of the development," he added.

Edgar Street has been in use since 1924 when Hereford United were first formed.

In 2014, it became the home of Hereford FC - the club which was formed following United's liquidation.
