Police stop and search powers have been put in place after a mass brawl in which a 16-year-old was seriously injured and another boy arrested.

The victim was taken to hospital after what Greater Manchester Police described as a "large scale fight" on Stuart Street in Oldham at about 18:00 BST on Monday.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and assault after another teenager was attacked less than an hour later on Garthwaite Avenue.

The extra police powers have been authorised in area between Lee Street and Frederick Street until 20:00 on Wednesday.

'Proportionate'

Supt Phil Hutchinson said the move was "proportionate and necessary".

He said officers believed the attack was targeted and appealed for witness to come forward.

“There will be extra officers in the local area both on foot and in patrol cars," he said.

"If you have any concerns our officers will be happy to provide reassurance and listen to any of your queries."
