'Exhausted' deer rescued from beach

An "extremely exhausted" roe deer was rescued from Cleethorpes beach, a wildlife group has said.

Emergency services were called on Monday evening by concerned members of the public who feared the deer was stuck in mud.

Volunteers from Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue (CWR) found the "frightened" deer with its face in a fence near the water's edge.

A deer net was used to capture the animal, which received treatment from a vet and was released later in a "safer location". CWR added.

Earlier, the deer had been spotted swimming in the estuary, "which is often completely normal", CWR said in a statement on Facebook.

However, the group then received reports – which it could not confirm – of the deer being chased by dogs on the beach.

Volunteers arrived to observe the deer, which appeared to be deteriorating. A rescue was launched and "with good planning and teamwork, the deer was contained in just a few seconds".

The animal was transported to Medivet, in Swanland, East Yorkshire.

Following treatment, the deer became "a lot more alert", and its condition "improved considerably" on the return journey to Cleethorpes, CWR said.

The wildlife group thanked the volunteers, vets and members of the emergency services who took part in the successful rescue.
