Badger rescued from skate bowl in Cornwall

A volunteer helped save a badger stuck in a skate bowl in Newquay on Sunday

A badger has been rescued after falling into a skate bowl in Cornwall.

Cornwall Badger Group said the animal could not escape the area at Newquay Skate Park due to it being too steep.

Volunteer Dave Hudson helped the badger escape on Sunday morning with a blanket and a plank of wood.

He said: "I found the badger kind of curled up in the middle of the skate park in the bowl, originally we thought he was injured, but I think he just kind of scraped up his paws a little bit trying to get out... he was moving totally fine.

"I'd taken this massive blanket in case I needed to scoop him up, so I popped that on the side of the ramp and he had a little go, and initially pulled the whole thing in there with him."

Mr Hudson said it "took a little while for him to work out what was going on", but after a few minutes "he managed to climb out and off he ran".

Mr Hudson said it was "fortunately early enough that there weren't too many people around" when he rescued the badger.

He said: "There is an increasing population of badgers, urban badgers, and there's a fair few badgers in and around Newquay.

"They're not vicious animals, they don't want to interact with humans, they'd rather keep their distance and disappear... they're wonderful parts of our ecosystem."
