A 58-year-old man has been arrested over a "viable yet crude device" found during a security alert in County Antrim.

The alert began in Newtownabbey on Thursday evening at a business park on the Sanda Road.

It caused road closures and homes to be evacuated. Roads reopened on Friday with the residents of neighbouring properties also able to return to their homes.

Police remain at the scene.

Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Det Insp McCamley said police were searching a property at about 20:30 BST when the suspicious object was found.

He said that led to the "safety operation" in which roads were closed and people asked to leave their homes.

"Ammunition Technical Officers attended and determined that the object was a viable yet crude device," Det Insp McCamley added.

Enquires are ongoing and the PSNI have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
