The death of a 37-year-old man who died in hospital hours after he was arrested has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Merseyside Police said officers were called to Keir Hardie Avenue in Bootle shortly after 09:30 BST on Sunday following "reports of a man behaving erratically in the street".

After being detained on suspicion of causing criminal damage, the man "suffered a medical episode" and was taken to hospital, the force said.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported, said Merseyside Police. Deaths in custody are routinely referred to the IOPC.
