Consultation to open on plans for new substation

A consultation over plans to build a new electricity substation near Rotherham will open on Monday.
National Grid wants to create a 400 kV substation on land to the east of Long Lane, near Brinsworth.
The plans are part of the company's Brinsworth to High Marnham project, external, which includes three new substations and upgrades to existing overhead electricity lines.
Leanne Evans, National Grid project director, said the scheme would help meet the rising demand for electricity.
"As the nation moves towards net zero, the fossil fuels that once powered our economy will be replaced with sources of low-carbon electricity," she said.
“This project is one of several network upgrades designed to get greater capability out of the existing network, allowing more electricity to pass through the transmission network and help accelerate the connection of clean energy projects."
The National Grid intends to submit planning applications to Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, North East Derbyshire District Council and Bassetlaw District Council in early 2025.
If approved construction work would start in summer 2026 for an operational substation in winter 2029.
The consultation, external is open from from 20 May to 17 June.
