The gasworks on Hykeham road are needed to "futureproof" the network

Main roads in Lincoln will be affected by closures for the next 11 weeks.

Gas supplier Cadent will replace more than 3,000ft (1,000m) of underground pipe on Newark Road and Hykeham Road between 17 June and 3 September.

It said the gas mains are being replaced to "futureproof" the network and ensure it is ready for the introduction of new fuels.

The disruption includes a one-way road closure on Hykeham Road. A diversion route will be in place via Newark Road, Moor Lane and Lincoln Road.

There are also lane closures along Newark Road past the Hykeham Road junction.

Richard Sansom, network director for Cadent in the East Midlands, said they understood the "frustrations that this will cause to road users and residents," and urged people to "allow a little bit more time for their journeys throughout the period of the works".

The project is a part of a bigger programme of work to upgrade gas mains in the local area, which included work elsewhere on Newark Road earlier this year. Cadent are spending £1.1bn altogether on upgrading the region's gas network.

Mr Sansom added that the work is essential "minimise the amount of repair work" they need to carry out in the Lincoln area.

"Keeping the people of Lincoln warm in their homes is our number one priority," he said.
