The fire service has issued a warning to the public after a bin caught fire on the island this week.

Guernsey Fire and Rescue said a bin caught alight at Vazon and burned completely out on Tuesday night, likely due to a disposable barbeque or cigarette butts being put inside.

It warned members of the public fires of this nature could spread onto local surrounding vegetation and get out of control.

As part of a warning on social media, Guernsey Fire and Rescue urged the public to "be sensible with anything which may start a fire".

'Higher alert'

It said: "When the weather heats up, we at Guernsey Fire and Rescue always have to be on higher alert because of the potential for fires like these or vegetation fires, but simple good practice can prevent many fires from starting in the first place.

"Disposable barbeques should never be put on dry grass or directly onto sand, as it will cause it to get very hot and be a serious burn risk.

"They should only be disposed of when they are entirely cool, and, ideally, should not be left in public bins.

"Ashes should not be put straight into bins."

It added: "Don’t leave glass in the sunlight, don’t flick cigarettes into vegetation, and don’t dispose of hot beach barbeques."
