Teenager with Down's syndrome set for running goal

A York teenager is taking on a running challenge for his school after being inspired by a 2024 London Marathon finisher with Down's syndrome.
Jack Ratcliffe, 17, will run to Applefields School on Thursday to raise cash to buy sports equipment after improving his running through the Couch to 5K challenge.
He watched 19-year-old Lloyd Martin complete the marathon in April, becoming the youngest person with Down’s syndrome to complete the route.
Jack initially aimed to raise £100 for his school, but the current total has surpassed £1,000.
Jack has been out training for the challenge three times a week after school and over weekends.
Alison Metcalfe, his mother, said she was “very, very proud” of what he had achieved.
“Running 5km is a challenge for Jack - he recently started the Couch to 5K but needed a reason to do something," she said.
“To see him progress through the weeks has been amazing to watch.”
His classmates and teachers are set to cheer him on and greet him at the finish line.
Jack, a York City FC supporter, is raising money for physical education equipment due to his love of football and other sports, his family said.
“After the challenge Jack will sit down with the teachers and talk about what the money will be spent on," Ms Metcalfe said.
“Running is something that he wants to carry on with as it will improve his football."
