An express bus service between Sunderland and Durham is being relaunched this weekend.

The X20 bus will run every 30 minutes between the two cities beginning on Sunday.

Go North East managing director Nigel Featham said the service was "crucial" for the region.

It will run between Sunderland, Houghton-le-Spring, Durham and Langley Park, calling at East Herrington, Rainton Bridge, Carrville, Arnison Centre, and Sacriston.

Mr Featham said: "The X20 is an absolutely crucial route, which we will be giving all of our attention to.

"The fares are lower than they've ever been, just £2 is the maximum anybody can pay there, £1 if you are under 22.

"We're going to be increasing the frequency as a commuter route, leisure route, shopping route."

Go North East said the journey between the two cities would take 46 minutes.

The X20 will also call at Doxford International at peak times, the firm said.
